Choices Medical Services: APR
Help is Available
If you have taken mifepristone, the first drug in the abortion pill regimen, and regret your decision, know that help is available.
Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) can provide an opportunity to continue your pregnancy by attempting to counteract the effects of mifepristone. This protocol is most effective when started within 24-48 hours after taking the drug, so timing is crucial.
There is hope. Contact the Abortion Pill Rescue Network’s 24/7 Helpline at 1-877-558-0333 to be connected to a provider and learn more.
What is APR?
Learning how the abortion pill works provides insight into how APR works to counteract its effects.
The abortion pill (also called medical abortion) uses drugs to end a pregnancy through 10 weeks gestation. The first drug, mifepristone, blocks a hormone called progesterone. Progesterone helps the pregnancy grow and develop, so without this hormone, it will end and detach from the uterine lining.
Next, misoprostol is taken. This drug induces uterine contractions that expel the pregnancy from the body.
APR works by administering doses of progesterone to try to outnumber and outcompete the effects of mifepristone. The sooner it is taken, the higher the chances of a pregnancy continuing.
It is important to note that APR will not work if misoprostol has already been taken.
Progesterone Is Safe And Effective
Progesterone has been used to support pregnancies and reduce the risk of miscarriage for over 50 years, making it a practical option for continuing a pregnancy.
There is no evidence of an increased risk of birth defects compared to the general population. A study also noted that the protocol was successful in 64% (when progesterone is administered intramuscularly) and 68% (when progesterone is taken orally) of cases.
If you have taken mifepristone and are having second thoughts, you are not alone. You may be able to continue your pregnancy.
