Understanding Adoption
Your perceptions of adoption can come from many places. Maybe your family has personal experiences with adoption, or you’ve heard about this option from TV shows or books.
Adoption is very different from how it was in the past. Rather than “giving up your child,” you place them in a family. Though this option can be emotionally challenging, it can also offer peace of mind and an opportunity to build a relationship with your child.
This decision is yours alone. Choices Medical Services will provide information and education so you can get clarity.
It’s Your Choice
You make the decisions as your child’s birth mother. Selecting an adoption plan allows you to outline your wishes and preferences for the process and the future.
Part of making a plan includes selecting an adoption plan, with three to choose from:
Open Adoption
Select the right adoptive family for your child by considering what type of life you’d like them to have. Do you want them to be an only child or have siblings? Will they live in a more urban, suburban, or rural environment?
With an open adoption, you build a relationship with the adoptive family, which can be forged with letters, visits, phone calls, and more.
Semi-Open Adoption
With a semi-open adoption, communication occurs through a third party (like an adoption agency or attorney). Limited information, including first names, may be exchanged.
Closed Adoption
With a closed adoption, all identifying information is sealed. You and the adoptive family remain anonymous. This option isn’t commonly chosen, but it provides complete privacy.
As the birth mother, you do not pay for any adoption or legal expenses. Your medical costs can also be paid for if not covered by insurance, and many resources can provide material and emotional support during the process and beyond.
You Don’t Walk Alone
While Choices Medical Services is not an adoption agency, we can provide referrals to adoption agencies and attorneys who will assist you further.
